Ontiveros Announces Candidacy for State Senate
Democrat Melissa Ontiveros will announce her candidacy for New Mexico State Senate District 31 on Thursday, November 14. As the Special Operations Coordinator for Community Action Agency, and co-president of the New Mexico Public Health Association, she has seen firsthand the needs of many in her District.
“Education, access to healthcare, work conditions and the environment are key to improving the health and well-being of all New Mexicans,” Ontiveros said. “As a State Senator, I will use my experience and education to advocate for my community and New Mexico families at the Roundhouse and every day.” Ontiveros is a resident of Las Cruces and believes that State Senators have a duty to be available to their constituents year-round, not only during the legislative session.
Ontiveros was raised in a Union family and is grateful for the health insurance she had access to as a child. Ontiveros understands that for many New Mexican families health care is not always easily accessible, especially in rural communities. She vows to fight for universal healthcare regardless of race, gender, income or where you choose to live.
As an advocate for public lands, Ontiveros has worked with environmental and conservation groups, local and state departments, and state and federal lawmakers to address and come up with solutions to climate change and protection of New Mexico’s environment. Ontiveros supports the growth of our National Monuments, including the Organ Mountains Desert-Peak and White Sands. She believes that everyone should have the right to enjoy the outdoors and supports programs that protect our beautiful land. She will also continue to advocate and support New Mexico’s transition to renewable energy.
The seat is currently occupied by Senator Joseph Cervantes (D), and while he has not announced his re-election, Ontiveros is prepared for a primary challenge in June. The New Mexico Primary will take place on June 2nd, and the General Election will be on November 3rd, 2020.
